How to make money from paper

I have to admit that I like reports. Before you decide that I’m nuts, I need to tell you that a report is anything that tells you something about your business.

An invoice to a customer is a type of report. It tells you what you sold to whom at a particular price at a specific date and how they paid (or will pay) for it. That’s a lot of information in one little piece of paper.

Analysing invoices can tell you how much money you make from specific products, from specific customers, and at what times. If you don’t know where you’ve been, how will you adjust your course to get where you want to be?

  • Gross Margin?
  • Daily Sales?
  • Daily “Nut”?
  • Breakeven Point?
  • Daily Cash In?
  • Daily Cash Out?
  • What are your most profitable products?
  • How many do you sell?
  • When do you sell them?
  • What prices do you sell them at?
  • Which customers buy them?
  • What other products do they buy?

Once you have this type of information, you can start to look at how to improve your bottom line.
